Hey party people, NYE is just around the corner! Whether 2015 was your best year yet or far from it, 2016 is bringing something new to the table and that is totally worth celebrating. New Year’s Eve parties are special for several reasons:

  • It’s both the first and last party you’ll go to for two different years
  • It’s one of the only times of the year you can get away with wearing sequins head to toe
  • You get to hear everyone at the party slurring the words to that New Year’s song nobody really knows (of all the somethings we forgot aaaand something blah blah BLAHHH)
  • If you’re lucky you get a kiss at midnight!

I’m hosting my very own NYE shindig this year, which means I needed a standout invitation for my guests. Stat. But even though I have absolutely no graphic design experience, I was able to whip up a few invitation options in a matter of minutes with the BeFunky Designer Toolset! There are tons of invitation templates to choose from, and each one is fully customizable to fit your theme. Here are a few of my designs:

Curious as to how I made the chalkboard invitation? Well you’re in luck because I’m about to give you all my secrets. This is how you do it:

Select An Invitation Template

I selected a template that had a photograph as the background so that I could easily change out the photo.

Then I went to the Image Manager Tab and searched Pixabay for a chalkboard background. I found the perfect one, clicked on it to save it to my available images, then drag-and-dropped it right into the template to make it the background.

Add Your Own Text

After I changed the background image, I added a ribbon (found in the Ribbon category in the Design Elements Tab) and began adding in text to the header and body of my invitation.

Add Some Dimension

I added a drop shadow effect to the main text in the invitation to make it really stand out. To do this, I simply used the Duplicate button to create an identical version of the text, then changed the color to dark gray and hit the Move Backwards button to move it behind the main text. This gives a shadowing effect that really adds dimension.

Add Some Lines

If there’s a lot of information on your invitation, it’s helpful to break up your text with some lines. You can find them in the Design Elements Tab.

Finishing Touches

I added some graphics to finish up the invite. This dressed it up just enough.

And the finished product! Let the countdown begin :)
