Did you think you always had to put up with the same shop-bought Hallmark greeting cards? Think again!
The BeFunky Designer Toolset is a glorious thing. Truly. It’s gifted with the ability to turn you into a creative whizz at will, meaning it’s the most magical thing we could get our hands on short of actually having a wand (damn Hogwarts letter getting lost).
Everyone loves a snazzy greeting card, so why not step it up this year and try and make your own? It’s not just for the big holidays—4th of July, birthdays, weddings and such—but can totally be used in everyday settings to add a little extra whimsy to your life. Got a work hubby or wife? What better way to surprise them than with a cute little customized card?
You can pick your own images, browse through a crazy selection of fonts (or even add your own!) and design your card with a specific person in mind. And you know what’s even better? You can do it in less than ten minutes!
But how exactly do you go from a card connoisseur to a card maker, you may ask? Fear not little pet. Here’s the 411 on how to make your own snazzy lil’ greeting cards for any occassion.
Choose Your Template
This process is so simple you’ll honestly wonder why you haven’t tried it before. Start out by heading over to the Designer Toolset, then select ‘Greeting Cards’ and pick your favorite template.
There are loads of different layouts to choose from so have a bit of fun playing around. For my first design I chose a template with a vertical split, with an image taking up a whole side of the card.
You can go beyond templates and add in your own images to keep the party going in the Image Manager. Upload your own photos by clicking on ‘Computer’, add in your BeFunky photos or even import your Facebook photos in if you like. And if you’re in need of some inspiration (or just decent images) you can search for (and insert photos with!) that fabulous stock image site, Pixabay.
There are also loads of different little things you can add to customize your greeting card like arrows and badges. You can find all that rad stuff in the Design Elements tab, where you can also find graphics for a variety of themes including weddings, birthdays and more.
You’re now officially one step closer to becoming a graphic designer—hoorah! I’m so proud I could just pinch your cheeks.
Edit with Ease
Once you’ve got your template sorted it’s all about making your greeting card look nice and fancy. You can add in your own meaningful images by dragging and dropping them in the Image Manager tab…
Pro Tip: You can edit your photos without ever having to leave the Designer! Just select your image and click ‘Open Image in Editor’ to be taken to the Photo Editor for a quick round of editing.
change the background color of your card…
…or even add a special message with the text feature:
Play around with the different elements until they’re all right where you want them. Make the text bigger (cause hey, bigger is always better, right?), experiment with different colors and really try to make your card unique. Need some visual inspiration? BeFunky’s Pinterest is always worth a look or two, hubba hubba.
Your Final Version
All that’s left when you’re done is to print your card and give it to the person you’ve got in mind. Your friend, your other half, your colleague—the possibilities really are endless! Don’t keep recycling the same old greeting cards. Speak from the heart, use your own sense of humor and create a card that you won’t find anywhere else.
If you’re stuck for inspiration, never fear. To help you out, I’ve picked out a few my favorite greeting cards from around the web for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!
We can all relate, right? Julie Ann Art is amazing for picking up on the everyday things and turning them into a brilliant message. She designs greeting cards for every day occasions, and there’s always something there to make you smile.
Emily McDowell is amazingly straightforward with her cards which makes them some of the best out there. This wedding one is my favorite, though, because it’s the exact reaction I’d have if I found out one of my friends was getting married!
9th Letter Press’s cards are brilliantly honest. You’ll find simple phrases that get across exactly what you want to say.
For greeting cards with a twist, head to Bench Pressed. Their illustrations are also really, really cute.
